While coal is the source of energy most Grand Rapids residents use of electricity, natural gas has doubled in the last 10 years. Since 2016, natural gas has accounted for 25% of the energy generation in the state. With over 40,000 square miles of Great Lakes border, Michigan ships 1/3 of all the coal in the Midwest. There is also a strong renewable energy portfolio with nearly 8% of total energy generation coming from renewable sources.
