Even though NYC is the densest city in the nation, residents consume less energy than the national average. In the summer, the city can be quite hot due to all the concrete and building trapping the heat in. This can make a large city, like New York, 3-5 degrees hotter on average than surrounding areas. You can see on the graph below that NYC residents do consume more energy in the summer months than the rest of the state trying to keep cool. However, throughout the year the city’s residents consistently use less energy than the rest of the country.
