The state of New York has seen more than 1,000% growth in solar power installation since 2011, Governor Cuomo announced on Monday.
The growth started back in December 2011 with a $2.8 billion private investment into the state’s clean energy economy.
The state has a goal under the NY-Sun program to have 50% of all electricity generated in the state come from renewable energy sources by 2030. They hope to bring solar power to 150,000 NY homes and businesses by 2019.
“We will continue to support the development of solar, helping to spur economic growth, creating new jobs and helping to build a cleaner, greener and more sustainable New York for all,” Cuomo said in his announcement.
According to Cuomo, the solar growth has fueled more than 12,000 jobs across New York.
The state aims to add more than 3 gigawatts of installed solar capacity by 2023. That capacity could power more than 400,000 homes and businesses.
The ultimate goal of NY-Sun is the development of a sustainable, self-sufficient solar industry in the state. To get there, NY-Sun has incentive programs that support solar projects for commercial and industrial companies, homes, multifamily buildings, small commercial, not-for-profit and municipal buildings.
