Michigan produced a substantial amount of coal in the 1800s but today all the active coal mines in MI have been shut down. However, Michigan ports handle 1/3 of all coal shipments in the Midwest and Great Lakes region making coal a large portion of the energy sources in Detroit. Natural gas has nearly doubled in usage over the past 10 years and will be a big part of Detroit’s energy market in the future. Most of the renewable energy in MI comes from wind energy with 24 wind warms statewide. Wind energy surpassed biomass at the most significant renewable energy source in 2013.
