Illinois residents and business consumed over 1,000 trillion BTUs of hydroelectric power in 2015. Natural gas, coal, and ethanol were also highly consumed energy sources in IL. Renewable energy has grown in the past decade with 146 trillion BTUs of biomass and 104 trillion BTUs of other renewable sources consumed in 2015. In total, Illinois exported over 460 trillion BTUs than it imported in 2015.
