The 3 main sources of energy generation in Maryland are coal, natural gas, and nuclear power. More than 80% of the energy consumed in Maryland come from out of state. Even though natural gas consumption has increased in the last 10 years, coal and nuclear power still account for the majority of energy production. Renewable energy accounts for 11% of Maryland's total energy production with the majority of that coming from hydroelectric power. Maryland is home to the Conowingo hydroelectric power plan, one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the country. The plant sits on the Susquehanna River and provides Maryland all of its hydroelectric power.
